It’s widely recognized that if a gaming console is going to be a major player in the world market, it needs to make it in the intensely competitive Japanese market. Sony has received a major boost with the latest sales figures from Media Create showing that twice as many PS3s were sold in Japan in the last week of July, compared to the week before. Wii sales were down a little during the same period.

Nintendo’s Wii next-generation gaming console has broken yet another record, this time in Australia, having sold more than 100,000 units in the six months since its launch. This makes the Wii the fastest selling console to reach 100,000 unit sales, according to market research company GfK.

An increasingly desperate Sony has a new plan to save its floundering PS3 games console — cut jobs. This new plan is substantially different to its old plan. Now, instead of cutting jobs in Europe, it’s cutting them in the US.
Officially, Sony Computer Entertainment has cut jobs in the US in a bid to become more competitive and to “adjust to the industry”, according to a Sony spokesperson in Japan. The spokesperson said there were no plans to cut jobs in Japan.
“The goal is to reform the organization,” the spokesperson told AP.
