The Nintendo Wii has been a phenomenal success so far, outselling all of its competitors in every territory around the world. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are both magnificent consoles, but in sheer sales numbers, the Wii is kicking both their arses. But is the Nintendo console a novelty? Microsoft certainly thinks so.

Wii Fit has been out for almost two months in America now, but it has been out in Europe a little longer, and in Japan, the home of Nintendo, for over six months. Which means Japanese gamers are pretty much over their initial interest in following the daily regimen. But worry not Wii-owning fitness freaks, as Wii Yoga is on its way.

Being a games console manufacturer is a tricky business, and one which by no means guarantees profits. Just ask Sega. With news that Sony has lost over $3 billion from just making and selling the PS3, and the fact that the Xbox 360 has already cost Microsoft $1 billion due to the Red Ring of Death recall, is it the case that the Nintendo Wii will be the only profitable console this generation?

It’s that time of the month again. No, not that time of the month, but the other time of the month, when NPD reveals the hardware and software sales data for the US, and we then argue about what it all means. The Wii is continuing its dominance, outselling the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined, but the bigger news is that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by more than just a few thousand this time around.

The 3G iPhone, otherwise known as the iPhone 2 is currently being unveiled by Steve Jobs today at the WWDC. Why am I mentioning this on a gaming website? Because apparently, the iPhone is about to become a competitor to Nintendo, and Sony in the handheld games console market.

Love it or hate it the Nintendo Wii has been a huge success, and with the console derided by many for being worthless beating the PS3 and Xbox 360 for sales month on month, Sony and Microsoft are looking at their rival with envious eyes.

The Wii is in a world of it’s own in terms of what games work, and what games sell well. But does this mean that apart from Nintendo who continue to push the boundaries of what is capable on the machine, developers are going for the cheap and easy option? In other words rather than care about the product, they are purely seeing the casual gamer dollar signs before their eyes.

Wii Fit has now been out for about a week in the States, and already many stores and online retailers are reportedly sold out of all stock and waiting for more from Nintendo. So, what exactly is the appeal? And how can the PS3 and Xbox 360 compete with a machine which has become more of a lifestyle device than a mere games console.

Occasionally, after reading the comment discussions of you readers, I am forced to step back and re-evaluate my position on Nintendo; after all, everyone deserves a second chance, right? I can officially say I’m back to a pitiless position on Nintendo, because the gaming giant got caught with a hand in the business cookie jar back in the 1990s, was penalized $232 million for colluding to raise prices by the EU commission, and won’t stop whining about it.
