It doesn’t seem to matter how successful the Wii is but analysts and industry watchers consider there to be something missing. However, there is no new Wii on the way, at least according to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

We all knew it, but it’s taken a few months for Nintendo to admit it. The Wii has had a relatively bad year, at least by its own incredible standards set during the first two years of its life. And the CEO of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, has admitted things haven’t gone as well as expected over the last few quarters.

It was a genius game that still stands up to scrutiny if you can get past the distinctly unimpressive graphics. Although for the time, they were astoundingly good. For some reason, no Bond game since has been able to top Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64. But maybe Goldeneye 2010 on the Wii could.

The PS3 won the hardware battle as expected, with only the DS preventing it from managing a clean sweep. Meanwhile, Halo 3: ODST sold massively well, racking up sales of over 1.5 million units.

The Nintendo Wii is many different things to different people. For some, it is the gateway to this hobby, the epitome of casual gaming. To others, it is a useless machine that should have been killed at birth. But love it or hate it, the Wii has been a phenomenon, (d)evolving gaming forever. How else do you explain the bicycle peripheral that’s heading our way?

Gaming tends to follow trends, with genres peaking and dipping in terms of popularity. One of the biggest hits of recent years has been the rhythm-action genre, with game series such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band being guaranteed bestsellers and a virtual license to print money. But is there time coming to an end, or is there plenty of life left in the genre yet?
