The Nintendo Wii is many different things to different people. For some, it is the gateway to this hobby, the epitome of casual gaming. To others, it is a useless machine that should have been killed at birth. But love it or hate it, the Wii has been a phenomenon, (d)evolving gaming forever. How else do you explain the bicycle peripheral that’s heading our way?

It was bound to happen, and it now has done. After the release of the PS3 Slim and the price cut which accompanied it, and the Xbox 360 price cut as well, Nintendo had little choice but to act, and act fast. So from Sunday, Sept. 27, the Wii will cost $199 in the States, and supposedly will have its price cut by a similar figure in other territories as well.

The Wii has done phenomenally well since it was released, grabbing a huge market share and leading the PS3 and Xbox 360 consistently since the three have been on sale together. July was a slow month in gaming with sales dropping for the past five months. However, August looks to be a new month with some indication of the holiday season finally creeping upon us. Almost all of the platforms increased in August from July, with the PS3 taking an exceptional leap. Unfortunately, the legendary PS2 continues its downward spiral.

The PS3 Slim has now been on sale for over a week and preliminary sales figures are starting to trickle in. Suffice to say, things are looking up for the Playstation 3. But will this sales boost continue past the initial buzz? And if so, what would this resurgence mean for the Wii and Xbox 360?

A lot of overblown nonsense has been written about the PS3 Slim over the last few days. After all, this is just a new iteration of an existing console which is almost exactly the same as its nearest predecessor. However, I’ll concede that the mostly positive talk of the PS3 Slim has me wondering if it can actually achieve what Sony wants it to – kicking a hole in sales of the Wii and Xbox 360.
